"The disciple Jesus loved" takes a deep dive into that Thursday evening. In John 13-17, the disciple named John, one of Jesus' inner circle with Peter and James, shares a moving eyewitness account of Jesus' words and actions in his "last supper" with His disciples. The term Maundy Thursday comes from the Latin mandatum ("command") which is taken from John 13:34-35: "So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.”

There was a lot more going on at the Passover supper that Thursday evening in the Upper Room than sharing of food and drink! Jesus predicts the near future – His betrayal by one of his own disciples, and the three denials that another would soon utter out of fear for his own life, a completely irrational fear considering the identity of that disciple's rabbi. For Christians today, though, perhaps the greatest gift of the events of Maundy Thursday was to explain the events of the first Passover, when God spared the firstborn children of the faithful Children of Israel who'd obeyed His commands, killed a lamb without blemish, then eaten a (rather hasty) meal and painted their door frames with the blood of the lamb. God's true Lamb, without blemish, was poised to shed His blood on our behalf, that Death would pass over us once and for all, in the reunification of humankind with the God who created us.

On that Thursday night, as John tells it, Jesus also was focused on the welfare and education of His team. He was leaving them behind to carry on His work in the world. They would be enabled and empowered through the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, but in the moment, in a borrowed upper room, they were confused and, increasingly, afraid of what the future had in store for them.

But near the end of the meal, they were catching on: As John writes (John 16:29-33, NLT):
Then his disciples said, “At last you are speaking plainly and not figuratively. Now we understand that you know everything, and there’s no need to question you. From this we believe that you came from God.”
Jesus asked, “Do you finally believe? But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when you will be scattered, each one going his own way, leaving me alone. Yet I am not alone because the Father is with me. I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”

Note that Jesus' words above aren't in the future tense. Not I will overcome the world (i.e., sin, death, and the Devil), but I have overcome the world. Are there any more comforting and at the same time motivating words for us than those? As Paul would later write: If God is for us, who can ever be against us? (Romans 8:31b, NLT).

On Thursday night, Jesus' redemptive work was almost finished. But the last gasps of the world's "power" would be agonizing for Him to bear, on our behalf. Nonetheless, He took time to reassure and educate His disciples for the new covenant that He was bringing to the world. This week, I'd encourage us all to reflect on all of these things. If the opportunity presents itself, read John 13-17 in your preferred Bible translation. https://www.biblegateway.com/ is an easy way to do this, or you can use an app such as YouVersion https://www.youversion.com/ – or, of course, you can choose to read a "hardcopy" Bible! These chapters in John's Gospel share Jesus' valediction, and it's powerful and inspiring to read. You might also want to read Paul's stirring assessment of life in the Spirit as found in Romans 8 (the Scripture that literally inspired the Protestant Reformation). The essence of the Gospel in and through which we live and hope may be found in the these passages. I hope we see you in Trumbull Hall on Thursday evening, and I pray for a blessed Easter season for all.

For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

So then, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup. For those who eat and drink without discerning the body of Christ eat and drink judgment on themselves. That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep. But if we were more discerning with regard to ourselves, we would not come under such judgment. Nevertheless, when we are judged in this way by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be finally condemned with the world.
   – 1 Corinthians 11:23-32 (ESV)

Palm Sunday marks the beginning of the last week of Jesus' life (i.e., prior to His crucifixion), a period many Christians know as Holy Week or Passion Week.

I'm not much on sports metaphors, but as I thought about the events of Holy Week, March Madness drifted into my mind. The up or out nature of the college basketball "playoffs" can indeed lead to unexpected, even irrational outcomes, but they pale compared to the madness, from a human perspective, of Holy Week.

From His encounter with a Samaritan woman at Jacob's well, and turning water into wine at a wedding feast in Cana, Jesus would take His message, ministry, and his followers on a three-year journey. It seems that Jesus' ministry reached a climax of sorts at Bethany, when He called a four-days dead Lazarus out of his tomb. Many saw the event, and many believed, but John 11:46 (ESV) tells us that "some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done." The Pharisees feared mostly that the increasing interest in Jesus would lead to big trouble with Rome. Caiaphas, the (nominal) high priest that year, prophesied (!) Jesus' death as told in John 11: 49-50, saying "it is better for you that one man should die for the people, not that the whole nation should perish.” What he said was true and the key to God's plan for salvation for all of humankind, but Caiaphas had no idea what he really was saying! At any rate, the plot to kill Jesus started with this backlash to Lazarus' resurrection.

The Jewish leadership wondered whether Jesus would show up for the (fast-approaching) Passover in Jerusalem. Luke 9:51 (ESV) says that Jesus set his face to go to Jerusalem. Matters came to a head on the first day of the week (Sunday) prior to the Passover. Matthew 21 tells us "when they drew near to Jerusalem and came to Bethphage, to the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, "Go into the village in front of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord needs them,’ and he will send them at once.” They got the animals, put their cloaks on them, Jesus sat on them, and off they went... into Jerusalem.

Seeing this man, known to many already for His words and His actions, riding into town on "the colt, the foal of a donkey", everybody knew what was going on – yes, everybody, including those focused on killing this rabble-rousing Jesus. And since it was Passover season, Jerusalem was packed. Ecstatic people lined the street, waving palm branches. Many, many people responded to seeing fulfillment of Zechariah's prophecy in the flesh by doing their part, calling out in response with language taken from Psalm 118. The atmosphere must have been electrifying! March madness!

But things would only get madder. Within days, that same crowd crying Hosanna (literally "Save us, please!") would be yelling "Crucify him!". Holy Week traces the madness that leads humans – God's creation – to kill the author of Life.

Jesus hit Jerusalem hard, cleaning out the Temple and engaging with the Pharisees over their hypocrisy and their lack of understanding. They had all the information that they needed, via the Law and the Prophets, to know exactly who Jesus was. The problem was that their head knowledge didn't translate into heart knowledge. Like the pharaoh of Egypt, way back in the time of that first Passover and the exodus of the then-enslaved "Children of Israel" at the start of their forty year sojourn to the Promised Land, the Pharisees’ hearts were hardened. The hearts of high priests Caiaphas and Annas (father-in-law of Caiaphas and the de facto authority at the time) were hardened. By the end of the week, the hearts of many of the multitude of Jews in Jerusalem had hardened, judging by their responses to Pilate as described in Mark 15 and Matthew 27. By Friday morning ("Good Friday"), Jesus' earthly fate was sealed. By Friday evening, His body was sealed in a tomb.

I think there are two important things to keep in mind when we think about the events of Holy Week.

1. Jesus' rather ramshackle entrance into Jerusalem ("lowly pomp", to quote the old Palm Sunday hymn, Ride On, Ride On in Majesty) might make us think of Cervantes' Don Quixote – but there's nothing quixotic about Jesus’ quest! The precise details of Jesus' triumphant entry were predicted by prophets centuries earlier. Not in obscure, flowery language, but exactly as prophesied. That certainly caught people's attention! On Palm Sunday, Jesus is on the verge of completing His mission, defeating sin and death once and for all, and reuniting humankind with our Creator. He's not tilting at windmills!

2. It's easy to see "the Jews" as the enemies in this story – but that misplaced resentment would miss the point entirely! The fickle, hard-hearted people in this story who in a very real sense are those who condemn Jesus to death... are us. Even so, we're not really the enemy. The enemy is the sin and evil that has had humankind under its spell since Genesis 3. We have been slaves to sin as the Children of Israel were slaves to the pharaoh of Egypt. But Jesus has his face set towards the enemy, and His goal is to rescue us.

In Romans 3:23, Paul's assessment (which I am taking slightly out of context) is pithy indeed: "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,". Both Jew and Gentile. All. Romans 3:24 returns to Paul's context, which is the great Good News in, with, and under Holy Week's barrage of (seemingly) bad news: "and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus." That redemption is the work that Jesus is riding into Jerusalem to finish, just days later, on the cross at Golgotha, and a few days after that by exiting the tomb, alive for ever and ever, on Easter morning.

If I may lumber back to my March Madness metaphor one final time: With His death on Good Friday and His resurrection on Easter Sunday, Jesus broke the curse. Not figuratively, but literally. Once and for all.

Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion!
Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem!
Behold, your king is coming to you;
righteous and having salvation is he,
humble and mounted on a donkey,
on a colt, the foal of a donkey. – Zechariah 9:9-12 (ESV)

Lord, save us!
    Lord, grant us success!
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. – Psalm 118:25-26a (NIV)

As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, say that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away.”

This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet:

“Say to Daughter Zion,
‘See, your king comes to you,
gentle and riding on a donkey,
and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’”

The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. They brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted,

“Hosanna to the Son of David!”
“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”
  “Hosanna in the highest heaven!”

When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, “Who is this?”

The crowds answered, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.” – Matthew 21:1-3, 6-11 (NIV)

It's the familiar story of one of Jesus' most amazing miracles: the raising of his friend Lazaraus (brother of Mary and Martha) from the dead! Yes, it is a great story for Lent. Jesus is on His way to the last week of His life, "Holy Week" or "Passion Week", as it's known on the church calendar. He is about to bear the weight of all of our sins, but He had some other work do do in the meantime.

I've been reading stories like these for a long time, so I wasn't really expecting any surprises when I read it again this week. The story largely speaks for itself. Four days in the tomb? Why is that detail mentioned? Is it important? Sometimes people seemed dead, but really weren't. They didn't have good tests for "clinical death" in those days. But, after four days, Lazarus would be "really and completely dead" by the time Jesus got there. If Jesus resurrected Lazarus, the event would be unequivocal.

Another detail: Jesus uses the situation as a teachable moment for Martha, leading her to confess Jesus as He really is: "the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who has come into the world from God."

Mary, Martha, and those gathered with them then go with Jesus to Lazarus' tomb. The New Living Translation gives us some more details, telling us a couple of things about Jesus' reaction to the death of his friend. He weeps, but he is also angry. He's not angry because He didn't get there in time to prevent His friend's death. He is angry at sin. Angry at death. Angry about the damage evil had done, and was doing, to God's creation. Anger is not a sin (although, of course, in us it can lead to sinful thoughts, words, or deeds), but sin leads to holy anger in "the author and perfecter of our faith" (Hebrews 12:2, NIV), Jesus the Messiah – the Son of God.

Jesus tells Martha and the others to roll away the stone. But Lazarus has been dead for a while. In the unforgettable language of the King James Version: "Lord, by this time he stinketh". But Jesus insists. Jesus beckons Lazarus to come out. And out Lazarus comes, and he stinketh not. He is alive!

But here's the interesting part. The detail I never noticed before. Just a little detail, but maybe an important one. The New Living Translation renders John 11:44 thus: And the dead man came out, his hands and feet bound in graveclothes, his face wrapped in a headcloth. Jesus tells the people with him to unwrap Lazarus and "let him go".

Not long after the events of John 11:17-14, there'll be another resurrection. Another dead person returned to life after three days in the grave. Not four, but still a long enough time to have been unambiguously dead. But there's a salient difference. When the women (!) reach the tomb on Sunday morning, they find the stone rolled back and Jesus gone! They run and tell the disciples. John (that same John, writer of the Gospel bearing his name) and Peter race to the tomb, and John tells us this (John 20:6-7, NLT):

Then Simon Peter arrived and went inside. He also noticed the linen wrappings lying there, while the cloth that had covered Jesus’ head was folded up and lying apart from the other wrappings.

Lazarus was summoned from death by the Lord and Giver of Life. Lazarus couldn't remove his graveclothes. Jesus asked other people to do it. But Jesus – Jesus gave up His life to defeat sin and death and then He rose again by His own power as the true and eternal Son of God. Jesus took care of His own graveclothes. And then, as He had told others to do for Lazarus, Jesus let us go... freed once and for all from sin and death by the power of His redemptive work.

When Jesus arrived at Bethany, he was told that Lazarus had already been in his grave for four days. Bethany was only a few miles down the road from Jerusalem, and many of the people had come to console Martha and Mary in their loss. When Martha got word that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him. But Mary stayed in the house. Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask.”

Jesus told her, “Your brother will rise again.”

“Yes,” Martha said, “he will rise when everyone else rises, at the last day.”

Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying. Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never ever die. Do you believe this, Martha?”

“Yes, Lord,” she told him. “I have always believed you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who has come into the world from God.” Then she returned to Mary. She called Mary aside from the mourners and told her, “The Teacher is here and wants to see you.”

So Mary immediately went to him.

Jesus had stayed outside the village, at the place where Martha met him. When the people who were at the house consoling Mary saw her leave so hastily, they assumed she was going to Lazarus’s grave to weep. So they followed her there. When Mary arrived and saw Jesus, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died.”

When Jesus saw her weeping and saw the other people wailing with her, a deep anger welled up within him, and he was deeply troubled. “Where have you put him?” he asked them.

They told him, “Lord, come and see.” Then Jesus wept. The people who were standing nearby said, “See how much he loved him!” But some said, “This man healed a blind man. Couldn’t he have kept Lazarus from dying?”

Jesus was still angry as he arrived at the tomb, a cave with a stone rolled across its entrance. “Roll the stone aside,” Jesus told them.

But Martha, the dead man’s sister, protested, “Lord, he has been dead for four days. The smell will be terrible.”

Jesus responded, “Didn’t I tell you that you would see God’s glory if you believe?” So they rolled the stone aside. Then Jesus looked up to heaven and said, “Father, thank you for hearing me. You always hear me, but I said it out loud for the sake of all these people standing here, so that they will believe you sent me.” Then Jesus shouted, “Lazarus, come out!” And the dead man came out, his hands and feet bound in graveclothes, his face wrapped in a headcloth. Jesus told them, “Unwrap him and let him go!” – John 11:17-44 (NLT)

Since this is an unusual year for us, our worship opportunities will be a little different than in recent years, but we're focused on providing meaningful ways to reflect, ponder, worship, and praise God for the gift of His Son Jesus Christ to serve as the perfect atoning sacrifice once and for all.

We will celebrate Palm Sunday at our 10 am Sunday morning worship service on March 29.
Palm Sunday commemorates Jesus's triumphal entry into Jerusalem and the fulfillment of the prophecy recorded centuries earlier in Zechariah 9:9. Palm Sunday marks the beginning of the last week of Jesus' life, a period of time many Christians know as Holy Week or Passion Week.

On Thursday, April 2, we will commemorate Jesus' institution of Holy Communion (known also as The Lord's Supper or the Eucharist) at a special Maundy Thursday evening service (7 pm) in Trumbull Hall at the Etna church. Our service will focus on Scripture readings and a celebration of Communion "in remembrance of Him".
The New Testament records the basic story of Maundy Thursday in the "synoptic Gospels" (Luke 22:7-38, Matthew 26:17-35, and Mark 14:12-31). "The disciple Jesus loved" takes a deep dive into that Thursday evening. In John 13-17, the disciple named John, one of Jesus' inner circle with Peter and James, shares a moving eyewitness account of Jesus' words and actions in his "last supper" with His disciples.

On Friday, April 3, it is common for Christian churches to commemorate the sad and horrifying events leading to Jesus' death on the Cross (see Matthew 26:26 - 27:62, Mark 14:32 - 15:47, Luke 22:22 - 23:56, and/or John 18:1 - 19:42) with a special church service . Christians call the day Good Friday - not out a sense of irony but rather as a testimony to the culmination of Jesus' saving work on our behalf.
We will not have a church service on Good Friday this year, but we do plan to share a short devotional via our website to provide an opportunity to reflect on the brutal yet essential events of that long-ago Friday when Jesus suffered and "gave up His spirit" (i.e., submitted Himself to death) so that death and sin might be conquered in His resurrection in the glory of Easter morning.

On Easter Sunday, April 5, we will start the morning with our traditional Easter breakfast in Trumbull Hall, and then we'll gather to celebrate Jesus' resurrection and the empty tomb at our 10 am worship service.

Please "stay tuned" to our website for additional details! We look forward to seeing you at one or more of our special worship services this year.

Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion!
Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem!
Behold, your king is coming to you;
righteous and having salvation is he,
humble and mounted on a donkey,
on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim
    and the war horse from Jerusalem;
and the battle bow shall be cut off,
    and he shall speak peace to the nations;
his rule shall be from sea to sea,
and from the River to the ends of the earth.
As for you also, because of the blood of my covenant with you,
I will set your prisoners free from the waterless pit.
Return to your stronghold, O prisoners of hope;
today I declare that I will restore to you double. – Zechariah 9:9-12 (ESV)

Some church traditions mark the approach of Easter with a time for reflection called Lent. The forty-day season of Lent – which actually encompasses forty-six calendar days, minus the six Sundays that occur "in Lent" but aren't part of Lent – began on Wednesday, February 18, the day often called Ash Wednesday.

You may think of Lent as an unusual tradition. Perhaps you didn't attend church when you were younger, or maybe you grew up in a church that didn't "do" Lent. Perhaps you grew up with a tradition (or even a mandate) to give up something for Lent. That tradition is actually a longstanding one, but there's more to the notion and intent of Lent than going six weeks without chocolate!

Lent is meant to be a season for reflection, a time to pause in the midst of life’s busyness and create space for God. We'd encourage you to set aside some time, daily or weekly, to think about Jesus life, ministry, and His inexorable journey to Jerusalem where He would become the ultimate, once and for all, Passover Lamb. In ancient times, the weeks before Easter were used to prepare catechumens (a fancy, old-fashioned "church word" for people undergoing instruction in the Christian faith) for their baptism and reception as members of the Christian church, which would typically happen at Easter.

The ancient tradition might not be quite what you're looking for this year, but you might enjoy reading or listening to a Lenten devotional series. There are many (many!) options. For example, you can give a listen to the 2026 edition of the Lenten podcast series we recommended last year from Trinity Church in Atlanta, GA. Just click here for their Lenten podcasts.

If you're the "DIY" type, you might enjoy spending some intentional time in the Scriptures, reading from relevant sections of any (or all!) of the four Gospels – for example, perhaps Matthew, starting with chapter 14; Mark, starting with chapter 8; Luke, starting with chapter 9; or John, starting with chapter 11. Since you've got more than 40 calendar days until Easter, there's no need to rush! Take your time, savor and reflect on the scenes, the people and their stories, and the lessons collected and shared by the Gospels' authors as they strove under the guidance of the Holy Spirit to document Jesus' life, ministry, and His laser focus on Jerusalem, the Cross, and ultimately the glory of Easter.

As I mentioned last week, Lent is "extra-scriptural", a tradition inspired and informed by the Scriptures, but not specifically discussed or addressed in them. Nonetheless, as the days lengthen and winter melts into spring, Lent gives us an opportunity to focus on Jesus, true God and true man, as we eagerly await Easter.

Whether you choose to observe Lent or any of its traditions this year, this is a good time to think about what God has done for you (for all of us) through His steadfast love for us and His keening desire to reunite all of His children with Him.

When the days drew near for him to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem. – Luke 9:51 (ESV)

In Job 2:7-8, Satan “went out from the presence of the Lord and struck Job with loathsome sores from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head. And he [Job] took a piece of broken pottery with which to scrape himself while he sat in the ashes.” At a typical Ash Wednesday church service, a pastor, deacon, or elder will daub ashes onto a person’s forehead or the back of a hand, and softly quote the words of Genesis 3:19 or the very similar words of Ecclesiastes 3:20: “All go to one place. All are from the dust, and to dust all return.”

Ash Wednesday is a time to be reminded of our mortality, which is another way of saying it’s a time to be reminded of our sin. Sin is separation from God, and it carries with it a death sentence. As a consequence of sin, we find ourselves existing as mortals on this Earth. Every death of a friend or loved one, and ultimately our own, is a bitter, painful reminder of the impermanence of that dust from which we were fashioned. Were we “Old Testament people”, we might react to these cheery thoughts by wearing “sackcloth and ashes”, ritualistically bemoaning our pitiful, fallen state.

I’ll quote the next verse of that Kansas song:

Same old song
Just a drop of water in an endless sea
All we do
Crumbles to the ground, though we refuse to see
Dust in the wind
All we are is dust in the wind

Ash Wednesday reminds us of our pitiful, condemned state – but not just to chide us for our bad lifestyle choices! We’re reminded of sin and death to make sure we understand our need for a Savior! As Chris Green memorably said: Jesus didn’t come to make sick people well [although Scripture makes clear that He did plenty of physical healing]. Jesus came to make dead people live. That incredible fact has maximum impact when we think about what being really most sincerely dead (to borrow from the Wizard of Oz) means. Death is permanent and irrevocable separation from the God who created us.

But then there’s Easter. The "mood" of the verb I used in the last sentence above was changed very early that Sunday morning from is to would be. Physical death would be separation from God (spiritual and eternal death), but God took it upon Himself, in the person of His Son, Jesus the Christ (Messiah), to pay the debt of our sin, to level the playing field – which we are incapable of doing for ourselves – once and for all. In Christ we are not dead – we are alive.

Thanks to Jesus’ sinless life as a living, breathing human being, culminating in His work on the Cross, we’re not just dust in the wind after all.

Thanks be to God!

Postscript: It’s interesting and kind of uplifting to note that Kerry Livgren, who wrote the lyrics to Dust in the Wind, was on something of a spiritual quest at the time. A few years later he became a Christian himself.
Source: https://depree.org/life-for-leaders/dust-in-the-wind-a-devotion-for-ash-wednesday/

Note: Unfortunately, we will not be offering an Ash Wednesday service in 2026. However, we are planning to hold several special services during Holy Week (the week before Easter). Please check our website in a few weeks for more information, and of course we look forward to seeing you at 10 am in Etna on Easter Sunday morning, April 5, 2026!

“I will put enmity between you and the woman,
and between your offspring and her offspring;
he shall bruise your head,
and you shall bruise his heel.”

"Mary Consoles Eve"
Sr. Grace Remington
https://www.plough.com/en/topics/culture/holidays/christmas-readings/mary-consoles-eve

Christmas was celebrated as a festival period of 12 days, bookended by the birth of Christ at its beginning, and at its end by the celebration of Epiphany (January 6, in most church traditions).

Epiphany was, and still is, a big part of the Christmas celebration. At our house, we don’t take down the decorations, nor stop listening to Christmas music, until January 6 is over. Epiphany commemorates the visit by the Magi (the "three wise men" -- see a 2016 version of which at the end of this post) to see the Christ, having seen a sign (the Star) in the skies. They followed it, and it led – to the King, whom they worshiped & to whom they presented gifts. We literally wouldn’t be here (in church, as Christians) if it weren’t for the outward focused part of Jesus’ ministry, which, it could be argued, started at Epiphany.

The word epiphany comes to us from the Greek, and means something like “a sudden manifestation of Deity to Mankind”. But I think I developed my understanding of the word epiphany far outside of the church. I have one of those flashbulb memories of a college class, “Contemporary American Letters” (it was the Seventies, after all!), reading James Joyce’s Dubliners. Dubliners is sort of Joyce with training wheels, suitable for beginners. I learned of Joyce’s religiously-informed, but decidedly secular take on the word epiphany.

The short stories of Dubliners feature various kinds of epiphanies. The “Joycean” definition of epiphany is a sudden spiritual manifestation, whether from some object, scene, event, or memorable phase of the mind — the manifestation being out of proportion to the significance or strictly logical relevance of whatever produces it. It can apply in any situation in which enlightenment allows the situation to be understood from a new, deeper perspective. I think of it as that kind of “A-ha!” insight. Now it all makes sense.

The Biblical Epiphany gives us that, too, doesn’t it? A sudden spiritual manifestation that gives a new perspective. The people of the "Old Testament" had an understanding of their long-awaited Messiah. He would come to restore God's relationship with His Chosen People, and to make things good for them... perhaps in a geopolitical sense. The rest of the world were the Bad Guys; Godless Gentiles, right?

But the Old Testament looks a lot different after Jesus’ birth, looking back on it. The prophecies and the comforting message contained in the Old Testament become much clearer, even though they're mixed in with all of those arcane regulations in Leviticus, and the trauma and bloodshed in the more historical books. Those messages of promise, redemption and comfort were understood by the Old Testament’s “contemporary” audience to refer to a Messiah. The Epiphany revealed that Messiah, not just to the Jews, but even to the rest of the world. Now that's an Epiphany!

The Messiah, Jesus, the Christ, really came. He was born of a woman and lived as a human being. He conducted a ministry, He ate and drank. He laughed and cried, and He was tempted. Ultimately, He suffered and died on a cross (a brutal form of execution set aside for only the worst sort of criminal or revolutionary). He was buried... but He rose again on Easter Sunday, and He lives (present tense)! He’s really here, and – maybe most important to “the rest of the world”, He came for everyone. That was the new perspective of the Epiphany that we celebrate on January 6th.

Joyce couldn’t have written it better himself.

(originally published, in a slightly different form, as a "Musing from the Pew" in 2018)

December 25, celebrated as the birth of Jesus (i.e., Christmas), has not traditionally been viewed in Christianity as a one-day event. Christmas Day is the beginning of a 12-day "Season of Christmas" that is commemorated in many church traditions. The end of "Christmas" is traditionally observed on January 6, known as the Epiphany (from a Greek word meaning to reveal or to make manifest), 12 days after December 25. Epiphany represents the revealing of Jesus, the Savior of mankind, to the Magi, and by extension, to the Gentile world. We'll talk a little more about Epiphany next week. Meanwhile, it is still Christmas, and we wish you all a merry Christmas!

As Pastor Scott Lambert pointed out in his message on Christmas Eve*, Jesus' birth was a watershed event in our salvation history – the coming of light into a sin-darkened world. Jesus is the Christ (in Hebrew, the Messiah), the Chosen One of God, but He wasn't just a "special" person – He was (is!) God Himself, 'veiled in flesh', as the lyrics of Hark, The Herald Angels Sing have it. Immanuel (Isaiah 7:14), "God with Us". Isaiah further characterizes the Messiah thus:
The people who walk in darkness
    will see a great light.
For those who live in a land of deep darkness,
a light will shine. – Isaiah 9:2, (NLT)

Jesus' saving work required three years of earthly ministry. That ministry ended with a week in which fallen humankind showed the worst of which it was capable – the crucifixion and death of a truly innocent man on Good Friday. You may recall that Jesus' crucifixion included three hours of darkness (Mark 15:33, Matthew 27:45). Then of course, Good Friday was followed by the surpassing joy of Jesus' resurrection at Easter. But, at least in terms of earthly history, it started with Jesus' birth... so, yeah, Christmas is kind of a big deal and well worth 12 days of attention!

Merry Christmas, indeed!
________________
* If you missed our Christmas Eve service, or if you'd like to experience it again, just click here.

We have seen them in action personally and virtually and have had the opportunity of introducing them to the church. We seek your continued support, your ideas for improvement in our committee operations, suggestions for ministries to consider for support, and stand ready to welcome anyone who might wish to become involved with our team. Fortunately, the member quickly became suspicious based on the vague content of the message and no harm was done, but these events are always unnerving. This particular occurrence gives us a good opportunity to be very careful of any email your receive from our church. If you receive an email purporting to be from our church office or pastor, be sure to check the actual sender's address (which may differ from the address displayed by your email app). You have any concerns about the genuineness of an email from the church, don't reply to that email but instead email the church office or pastor and ask if the email in question is legitimate. Also, do NOT open any attachment unless you're sure that it is from a legitimate source. It's "ordinary" in the sense that there are no major church festivals in the summertime, but summer is the time for growth and change both on God's earth and in God's church. This year, we're particularly attuned to the changes in the offing for our church! There will be a pot luck lunch available immediately after the worship service in Trumbull Hall. Please bring a dish to share if you're able to. Experience has demonstrated that there's always plenty of food to share, so even if you're unable to bring something to church on Sunday, please join us for the session if you can. As the people migrated to the east, they found a plain in the land of Babylonia and settled there.
They began saying to each other, “Let’s make bricks and harden them with fire.” (In this region bricks were used instead of stone, and tar was used for mortar.) Then they said, “Come, let’s build a great city for ourselves with a tower that reaches into the sky. This will make us famous and keep us from being scattered all over the world.”
But the Lord came down to look at the city and the tower the people were building. “Look!” he said. “The people are united, and they all speak the same language. After this, nothing they set out to do will be impossible for them! Come, let’s go down and confuse the people with different languages. Then they won’t be able to understand each other.”
In that way, the Lord scattered them all over the world, and they stopped building the city. That is why the city was called Babel, because that is where the Lord confused the people with different languages. In this way he scattered them all over the world. – Genesis 11:1-9 (NLT)

... some time passes ...

On the day of Pentecost all the believers were meeting together in one place. Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting. Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them. And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.
At that time there were devout Jews from every nation living in Jerusalem. Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise.” And they remembered his words - Luke 24:5-8 (ESV)

Together, these ministries serve New Hampshire, North America, Central America, the Caribbean, South America, Europe, Africa and Asia. They provide, in Christ’s name and in His love, support to people in large cities and the remotest villages, in tropical regions and on high mountains, in prisons and serene campgrounds, during peace and bitter war, and to people in every situation in life.
